Range hood and outdoor kitchen cleaning in Somerset County, NJ

The Somerset Hills from Far Hills to Bernardsville, Basking Ridge's open kitchens and the ridge roads above Warren. The grill on the deck gets the same care as the range inside.

Our Somerset County, New Jersey work runs from the estates of Far Hills, Peapack-Gladstone, Bedminster and Bernardsville to the open-plan kitchens of Basking Ridge, Warren, Watchung and Bridgewater, covering range hoods, ovens, outdoor kitchens and full grill restorations. A restoration is a teardown rather than a wipe-down: burner tubes, flavorizer bars, briquette trays, grates, igniters and the drip tray all come out before the steam goes in.

The kitchens here

Somerset County gives us three kinds of kitchen. The estates of Far Hills, Peapack-Gladstone, Bedminster and Bernardsville sit well back from the road, with a pro range inside and a grill or a full outdoor island on the terrace. Basking Ridge, in Bernards Township, has many newer houses planned around one big room, where the island hood is all that stands between the stove and the sofa. Warren and Watchung sit along the ridge with decks built for the view, and Bridgewater, Branchburg, Hillsborough and Somerville round out the county with busy family kitchens and patio grills.

The kitchens we see in the Somerset Hills

A long driveway usually means an outdoor kitchen at the end of it. In Far Hills, Peapack-Gladstone, Bedminster and up on Bernardsville Mountain, the house sits well back from the road and the terrace behind it holds a built-in grill, a side burner, often a refrigerator drawer and a sink. Those islands sit out from the first frost to the first cookout. A cover keeps the rain off. It doesn’t keep out the damp that settles underneath it, and we don’t think a covered grill is the same thing as a clean one.

The grill in the photo above is a Sedona by Lynx on its cart, lid down, stainless brought back to an even grain. A freestanding unit is simpler than a built-in, but the inside tells the same story. Grease drips past the grates onto the burner tubes and into the tray, and after a few skipped seasons it carbonizes. We have before photos of burner tubes caked to twice their diameter. At that point a brush does nothing.

Basking Ridge is a different kind of house. It’s part of Bernards Township, and many of its newer homes were planned around one big room, with the kitchen, the breakfast table and the family room all open to each other. The hood over the island or the range wall has to pull hard in a layout like that, and when its blower is loaded, last night’s salmon is still in the room at breakfast. Warren and Watchung sit along the ridge on sloped lots, with decks built for the view and a grill on each one that gets the full weather. Bridgewater, Branchburg, Hillsborough and Somerville fill in the valley below with family kitchens that simply get used a lot.

What Somerset County homeowners book most

The grill comes up early in the conversation here. Full outdoor kitchen and island cleaning covers the grill, the side burner, the vent hood if the island has one, the drawers, the refrigerator and the sink. When a grill has gone a few seasons without it, restoring a neglected built-in grill is the honest answer: the burners, bars, trays and igniters come out, heat tint and staining get worked back along the grain, and every part goes back in tested. A burner that’s rusted through or a cracked casting can’t be cleaned back to life, and we’ll say so.

Honestly, a restoration takes far more time than a cleaning, and a grill cleaned before the drippings have time to carbonize rarely needs one. That’s the cheaper path, and it’s the one we’d pick for our own deck.

Inside, the booking is usually the hood and the range together. Range hood cleaning for big open kitchens takes care of the baffles, the liner and the blower, and a steam clean for the range and ovens happens while the floor is already covered. Mixed kitchens are common out here. One kitchen in our own photos has a Viking hood over a Bertazzoni range with a KitchenAid next to it, and each of those comes apart differently, which is why how cleaning changes from brand to brand has its own page.

Could we tell you how many Peapack-Gladstone households search for grill restoration each month? No. Google’s keyword tools don’t report numbers for towns that small, and we won’t invent one. The county terms show up in the data, and the rest we learn from who calls.

Getting to you in Bedminster, Warren and Bridgewater

I-287 and I-78 meet at Bedminster, which puts most of Somerset County a short run off one or the other. Route 202 climbs into Bernardsville and Far Hills. Route 206 runs down through Bedminster toward Somerville and Hillsborough, Mountain Boulevard follows the ridge through Warren and Watchung, and Branchburg is a Route 202 and Route 22 run west of Somerville.

On the estates, the gate and the driveway are the only planning. Give us the code or the name of whoever will be there, and tell us whether to come to the kitchen door or a side entrance; the drop cloths go down from wherever we park. A long drive out can figure into a quote, and we’d rather tell you that at the start than surprise you at the end. Scheduling is Monday through Friday. If it can’t wait, phone us.

Nearby

Harding Township and Mendham are just north of Bernardsville, and both are on Morris County’s villages and horse farms. Down the ridge from Watchung, Scotch Plains, Mountainside and Berkeley Heights are listed with Union County towns below the Watchung ridge, and every region we travel to is on one page.

If the grill has a model plate, photograph it along with the burners. The model tells us which parts come out before we ever open the lid.

Local questions

Somerset County questions, answered

Can you restore a built-in grill where it sits, or does it have to come out of the island?

It stays put. The parts come out, the housing stays in the stone, and the counter around it gets covered before we start. The only thing that sends a grill to a parts order instead of a polish is a burner that's rusted through or a cracked casting, and we'll show you if we find one.

A caretaker runs the house for us. Can we book the visit through them?

Yes. Give us their name and number, and the quote, the confirmation and the day-of messages go to whoever you choose. We'll still send you the final photos if you want them.

Do you cover Hillsborough, Branchburg and Somerville, or only the Somerset Hills?

The whole county. The estates get talked about, but a Bridgewater colonial with a hood that nobody has opened in years needs us just as much. Route 202, Route 206 and Route 22 get us to all of them.

Our kitchen has a Viking hood over a Bertazzoni range. Is that a problem?

Not at all. We see mixed kitchens constantly, and each piece simply gets its own method: the Viking filters and blower one way, the Bertazzoni enamel and burners another. Tell us the brands when you book so the right parts list comes with us.

How do we know if our grill needs a restoration and not just a cleaning?

Burners that won't light all the way across, uneven or yellow flames, flare-ups from the bottom of the grill and rust showing on the tubes all point to a restoration. Pull the grates, take a photo of what's underneath and send it. We'll tell you which job it is before you book.
