Range hood and outdoor kitchen cleaning on Long Island, NY

From the Gold Coast estates of Old Westbury and Brookville to the harbors of Manhasset, Oyster Bay and Huntington. The kitchen inside and the one by the pool.

Dacor pro-style range with French-door ovens under a stainless Best hood insert with baffle filters, set in a tumbled travertine alcove with cream cabinets

On Long Island's North Shore, the range hood inside and the grill outside wear out in different ways: grease loads the hood's baffle filters and blower, while salt air off Long Island Sound stains and eventually pits the grill's stainless. NY NJ Appliance Cleaning steam-cleans both, plus ovens and cooktops, in the Nassau County estates and harbor towns from Kings Point and Sands Point to Old Westbury, Brookville, Muttontown and Oyster Bay, and east into Huntington.

The kitchens here

The Gold Coast is still the Gold Coast. Old Westbury, Brookville, Muttontown, Sands Point and Kings Point hold estate houses on big lots, and the kitchens run large: a pro range with a hood insert in the main kitchen, sometimes a second range in a catering kitchen, and a full outdoor kitchen near the pool. Manhasset, Plandome, East Hills and Roslyn are colonials and Tudors on smaller lots, with one serious range and a hood built into the cabinetry. Garden City is its own planned village of older houses. The harbor towns, Port Washington, Oyster Bay, Locust Valley, Cold Spring Harbor and Lloyd Harbor, put the grill within sight of the water, and the water brings salt.

The kitchens we see on the North Shore of Long Island

The Dacor in the photo above sits under a Best insert built into a travertine alcove, with cream cabinets on both sides. It’s a good picture of why North Shore hoods get missed. The alcove hides the liner. The baffle filters are above eye level and out of sight unless you bend down and look, and behind them is a blower that nobody thinks about until the kitchen starts smelling like last night’s dinner the next morning.

In our experience, the bigger the house, the longer that goes on. A Gold Coast kitchen in Old Westbury or Brookville often has two ranges, one in the main kitchen and one in a catering kitchen, and the second hood gets looked at even less than the first. Our hood insert and baffle cleaning pulls the baffles, steams the liner and opens the blower housing, and it’s the same process whether the hood is the one guests see or the one they don’t.

That Dacor has French-door ovens, by the way. Both doors swing open together, and both inner glass panels pick up the same brown haze from years of roasting. Steam cleaning French-door range ovens means both cavities, both panes of glass, the racks and the gaskets, and we’d much rather do it with steam than let a self-clean cycle bake the residue onto the glass.

Manhasset and Plandome are quieter jobs. The colonials and Tudors there tend to have one serious range. When it’s a Wolf, the red knobs, the sealed burners and the cast grates each get handled on their own. If that’s your kitchen, what we do differently on a Wolf walks through it.

What Long Island, New York homeowners book most

On the North Shore, the outdoor kitchen is as big a call as the hood. Sands Point, Kings Point, Lloyd Harbor and Oyster Bay put a lot of grills within sight of Long Island Sound, and salt is hard on stainless. You see tea staining first, those rust-brown freckles on a grill lid, then pitting if the salt sits there long enough.

Waterfront outdoor kitchen and grill cleaning starts inside the grill, with the burners out and the firebox scraped, and works outward to the side burner, the storage drawers and the stone around it. Getting the salt and the grease off before the cover goes on in fall is what keeps that stainless looking right, and it’s the single habit that makes an outdoor kitchen by the water last longer.

Honestly, some grills are past cleaning. If the burners have rusted through or a casting has cracked, a cleaning won’t bring it back, and we’ll say so before we start, not after.

The brands out here run wide. Dacor, Wolf, Viking, Thermador and Sub-Zero inside; Lynx, DCS and Kalamazoo outside. Dacor, Wolf and the other brands we clean each come apart a little differently, and that page explains how.

Search numbers won’t tell you much out here. “Hood cleaning long island” barely registers in Google’s keyword data, and a search like “range hood cleaning Manhasset” doesn’t register at all. The kitchens are real either way.

Getting to you, from the LIE to the harbor

The LIE and the Northern State get us across Nassau. For the North Shore villages it’s Northern Boulevard, then the smaller roads up toward the water in Sands Point, Lattingtown and Lloyd Harbor. The LIE is the LIE, so plan on a morning or an afternoon rather than a set time.

Many Gold Coast estates are gated, and plenty have a house manager or a caretaker who handles vendors. Tell us who’s letting us in, where the van should park, and whether the kitchen door or the service entrance is closer. We book visits Monday to Friday; anything urgent, pick up the phone. The drive is part of the price, which is why the hood, the oven and the grill belong on the same day.

Not everyone on the North Shore has a driveway. Great Neck Plaza, Port Washington and Manhasset have apartment and co-op buildings near the train, and those come with a managing agent who wants a certificate of insurance before a vendor comes up. Send us their requirements when you book and we’ll have the certificate there ahead of us. The hood in a building kitchen is often a recirculating model with charcoal filters, and its blower still needs cleaning even though nothing leaves the apartment.

Nearby

Great Neck borders Queens at Little Neck, and Little Neck and Douglaston, over the Queens line have plenty of the same waterfront kitchens a few minutes west. Keep going east past Huntington, and eventually the LIE hands you to Route 27 and the East End summer houses, where the outdoor kitchen season starts and stops with the house. Everything else we cover is listed on every region we work across three states.

Tell us how far the grill sits from the water when you call. It’s a small detail, and it changes what that stainless needs.

Towns we cover in Long Island

The Long Island Expressway and the Northern State Parkway carry us east across Nassau. Northern Boulevard, Route 25A, runs the North Shore through Great Neck, Manhasset and Roslyn and on toward Cold Spring Harbor and Huntington, with the harbor villages a few miles north of it. The Throgs Neck Bridge is the way onto the island from the Bronx side.

Local questions

Long Island questions, answered

Do you cover the Suffolk side of the North Shore, like Huntington and Lloyd Harbor?

Yes. Huntington, Cold Spring Harbor and Lloyd Harbor are on this page even though they're across the Suffolk line, because the kitchens and the salt air are the same as in Oyster Bay. Further east, the Hamptons have their own page.

Our house has a main kitchen and a catering kitchen. Can you do both in one visit?

Usually, yes. Send us a photo of each range and hood and tell us the brands, and we'll tell you honestly whether it fits in one day or needs two. Both kitchens share one setup and one trip, which is better for everyone.

How much does salt air off the Sound really affect an outdoor grill?

More than people expect. Stainless near the water gets brown tea staining first, and salt left on it through a winter under a cover can start to pit the surface. Cleaning it before the cover goes on in fall matters as much as the spring cleaning. Light staining comes off; deep pitting can be improved but not erased, and we'll say which you have.

Does the drive out to Long Island change the price?

No. Each appliance has its own set price and the drive is already inside it. Putting the hood, the oven and the grill on one visit is simply the easiest way to get more out of a single trip.
