Range hood and appliance cleaning in Essex County, NJ

Older houses that got their pro kitchen later: additions off the back of Short Hills colonials, Victorians in Glen Ridge and Montclair.

NY NJ Appliance Cleaning steam-cleans range hoods, ovens, cooktops, refrigerator coils and outdoor kitchens in homes across Essex County, New Jersey, including Short Hills, Millburn, Essex Fells, Livingston, Montclair, Glen Ridge, Upper Montclair, Maplewood, South Orange, Roseland and Caldwell. Most Essex pro kitchens were added to older houses, so the hood's blower and the accessible section of duct above it are usually where the job starts.

The kitchens here

Essex County kitchens are mostly pro kitchens built into houses that came first. In Short Hills, Millburn and Essex Fells the house is a 1920s colonial or Tudor with a kitchen addition off the back, and in that addition sits a 48-inch Wolf or Viking, a liner hood in the cabinetry and a pair of wall ovens. The hood was designed for the range, but the blower behind it hasn't been opened since the contractor left. Livingston's colonials and splits were opened up to the family room, so a hood that isn't pulling sends the smell of dinner through the whole floor. Montclair, Upper Montclair and Glen Ridge are Victorians with a serious range in a back-of-house kitchen the original builder never planned for, and the duct has to bend around a chimney or a beam to get outside. Same range, three different hood problems.

The kitchens we see in Essex County

Short Hills and Millburn are addition country. The house is a 1920s colonial or a Tudor, and at some point a new kitchen went on the back of it with a 48-inch Wolf dual fuel, a liner hood set into the cabinetry and a pair of wall ovens like the ones in the photo above. Somebody designed that kitchen, so the hood was sized properly. The blower behind it is another matter. It sits behind a panel that hasn’t come off since the contractor left, and after a few years of cooking most nights the wheel is coated to the point where the fan pulls a fraction of what it should. Our hood liner and blower steam cleaning starts with that panel.

Essex Fells is the same kitchen on a bigger lot, often with a second oven in the butler’s pantry and a built-in grill on the terrace. Livingston is different. The colonials and splits there were opened up to the family room a decade or two ago, and an open plan is unforgiving with grease. A hood that isn’t pulling puts the smell of dinner into the couch cushions. One homeowner who reviewed NY NJ Hoods, our commercial sister company run by the same team, said it plainly about a Wolf vent hood: the greasy smell was “invading the entire house.” After the cleaning, it wasn’t.

Then there are the Victorians. Montclair, Upper Montclair and Glen Ridge have some of the best old houses in New Jersey, and a lot of them now hold a pro range in a kitchen the original builder never planned for. The duct has to bend around a chimney or a beam to reach an outside wall, and every bend holds grease. Weak draw and a smell that lingers into the morning are the usual complaints. We handle the hood and the accessible duct section above it, and if the run beyond that needs work, we’ll tell you where our cleaning stopped and point you to a duct company. We don’t snake three floors of a Victorian, and nobody should pretend to.

What Essex County, New Jersey homeowners book most

The Wolf. It’s the range we see most in the kitchens above, and cleaning one is its own process: the knobs come off, the grates and burner caps are steamed on their own, the griddle plate is worked back to bare steel, and the oven cavity gets steam and a hand detail instead of the self-clean cycle. Honestly, we’d rather steam an oven than run that cycle. The cycle doesn’t touch the door glass or the gasket, and the steam does. The full sequence is on the full Wolf range teardown page, and in Essex it’s the call that comes in first.

Wall ovens come next. The Wolf double oven in the photo is typical of Short Hills: two full cavities, a warming drawer and a year of roasting baked onto the racks and the glass. Book them before Thanksgiving, not the week of. Steam cleaning for the oven cavity covers both cavities, the racks, the door glass and the gasket, and we’d suggest booking it with the hood so the range, the hood and the ovens are handled on one visit. Does anyone search for this by town? Google doesn’t publish numbers for a place the size of Millburn or Glen Ridge, so we can’t tell you how many of your neighbors do. We can tell you what the phone says: the hood first, the ovens second, and the rest once we’re in the door.

The rest is the terrace and the brands. Essex Fells and the bigger Short Hills lots have a built-in grill, sometimes a side burner and a pizza oven, and a built-in grill and outdoor kitchen service in May puts the season in order. Because a Viking, a Thermador or a Sub-Zero comes apart differently from a Wolf, the pro brands we work on each have their own notes.

Getting to you, from Millburn to Montclair

Route 24 and JFK Parkway bring us into Short Hills and Millburn, and Route 10, Eisenhower Parkway and I-280 cover Livingston, Roseland, Essex Fells, Caldwell and West Orange. Bloomfield Avenue runs the length of Montclair and Glen Ridge. The Garden State Parkway drops us into Maplewood and South Orange. Most Essex houses have a driveway, so the van is never far from the kitchen door, and we cover the floors from the door to the range before anything comes apart. Llewellyn Park in West Orange is gated, and the condo buildings in downtown Montclair and South Orange have boards; both just need to know we’re coming. Scheduling runs Monday to Friday, with urgent requests handled by phone.

One more Essex note. The train towns, Millburn, Short Hills, Maplewood and South Orange, have a lot of two-career households where nobody is home on a weekday, and we’re used to working with a house manager, a nanny or a neighbor with a key. Tell us who’s letting us in and we’ll keep them posted from the driveway.

Nearby

Short Hills sits on the Union County line, and the Summit and Westfield kitchens on the other side of it are the same houses with the same ranges. Route 24 keeps going into Morris County horse country, where Chatham and Madison start. To the north, Bergen County, our busiest, is a Route 17 drive from Montclair. Everything else we cover, county by county, is on every county and borough we cover.

A photo of the hood, one of the range and the name of your town is all we need to give you a straight quote.

Local questions

Essex County questions, answered

Do you cover Montclair and Glen Ridge, or mostly the Short Hills side of Essex?

All of Essex County. The Victorians in Montclair, Upper Montclair and Glen Ridge are a big share of our Essex work, because the duct runs in those houses give a hood more trouble than the additions in Short Hills do. Maplewood, South Orange, Caldwell and Roseland are on the same route.

Our kitchen is an addition and the hood vents up through the roof. Can you clean the whole run?

We clean the hood, the blower and the section of duct we can reach from the hood, which is where most of the grease sits because it's the warmest part. A long vertical run through the roof is a job for a duct company. If we see that it needs one, we'll say so rather than sell you a partial job as a full one.

We're in Llewellyn Park. How do you handle the gate?

Give the gatehouse our company name and the appointment window and we're in. A doorman building in Montclair or South Orange works the same way: tell the front desk we're expected. If the board wants a certificate of insurance first, ask for it when you book and we'll send it ahead of the visit.

Can you do the double wall ovens and the hood on the same visit?

Yes, and it's the sensible way to book in Essex. The hood, the range and the wall ovens share one setup: floors covered, cabinets masked, one clean-up. Splitting them across two days costs you a second morning at home for no better result.

When's the right time to book the terrace grill in Essex Fells or Short Hills?

Spring, before the first cookout, and if the grill sat under a cover from October it needs more than a brush. We'll pair it with the indoor work if you like, since we're already in the house. Fall is the second-best time: a clean grill under a cover over winter is a much nicer thing to open in May.
