A house in Riverdale or Fieldston usually has two exhaust runs worth cleaning: the range hood in the kitchen and the dryer vent in the basement or laundry room, which can run a long way to reach an outside wall. Lint packs into a long dryer vent the same way grease packs onto a hood's blower wheel, out of sight. NY NJ Appliance Cleaning cleans both, along with ovens and cooktops, in houses and co-ops across the Bronx, New York, from Spuyten Duyvil to City Island.
The kitchens here
Riverdale mixes co-op towers along the Henry Hudson Parkway, many with recirculating hoods and building laundry, with detached houses on the hills. Fieldston is a private enclave of large Tudor and colonial houses with basement laundry rooms and long dryer runs. Spuyten Duyvil sits on the hill where the Harlem River meets the Hudson. City Island, Country Club and Pelham Bay are waterfront neighborhoods of houses with yards, grills and salt air off Long Island Sound.
The kitchens we see in Riverdale and Fieldston
Riverdale sits on the hills above the Hudson, looking straight across at the Palisades, and its homes split two ways.
The first is the co-op. Tall buildings line the Henry Hudson Parkway and the streets around it, and the apartments inside mostly have recirculating hoods, since the kitchen can’t reach an outside wall. Laundry is usually down in the building. For these homes the hood is the job, and range hood cleaning in the Bronx means the metal filters, the blower wheel and the housing, all taken apart and steamed.
The second is the house. Fieldston is a private enclave of big Tudors and colonials on quiet, winding streets, and North Riverdale and Spuyten Duyvil have detached houses on the slopes too. Those houses have real kitchens, often a pro range under a chimney hood, and a laundry room in the basement with a dryer vent that has to travel a long way to get outside. Nobody thinks about that vent until the towels come out damp.
Not every oven we clean is blue enamel and stainless. The double oven at the top of this page has a black speckled porcelain cavity, a convection fan in the back wall and a woven door gasket, set into honey oak cabinets. That gasket is the part to be careful with. Scrub it hard and it frays. Oven steam cleaning above the Hudson loosens what’s baked on around it so it only needs a gentle wipe.
City Island is its own world. It’s a small island of houses and boatyards off the east Bronx, reached by a single bridge, and Country Club and Pelham Bay nearby face the same water. Patio grills there live in salt air all year. A cover keeps the rain off, but it doesn’t keep the salt out, and by May the burner tubes and the underside of the grates show it.
What Bronx and Riverdale homeowners book most
In the co-ops, the hood. In the houses, the hood and the dryer vent, and honestly we’d always book those two as a pair, since it’s one setup and one morning.
Here’s the case for the dryer vent. Lint that builds up in a long vent is a fire risk, and it also makes the dryer run longer to do the same load. Dryer vent and lint run cleaning covers the run from the back of the machine to the hood on the outside wall, and the floor behind the dryer gets cleaned up too. One limit: in a co-op where the dryer ties into a shared building vent, the part past your wall belongs to the building. We’ll clean what’s yours and tell you where yours ends.
Why do people hire this out at all? Partly because the parts are awkward. Partly because, as one homeowner wrote in a Google review of NY NJ Hoods, our commercial sister company, “It’s hard to find a company who is willing to clean residential hoods.” We’d like to be the easy answer to that.
On City Island and in Country Club, outdoor grill cleaning for waterfront homes is the spring booking. Mixed kitchens are normal in the houses up here, a Viking range beside a Thermador wall oven and a Sub-Zero, and brand-specific care for pro appliances explains what changes from one to the next.
Getting to you on the Henry Hudson Parkway
Riverdale is about as straightforward as city driving gets. The Henry Hudson Parkway runs right up through it, past Spuyten Duyvil, Fieldston and North Riverdale, and the Major Deegan handles Kingsbridge. Fieldston’s streets are private and narrow, so a driveway spot is a big help. Spuyten Duyvil climbs steeply off the parkway, and on an icy morning we’d rather move the visit a day than take a loaded van down one of those hills. The co-ops have garages, service entrances and elevators, and the front desk will want our arrival time.
The east side is a separate trip. The Hutchinson River Parkway and the Bruckner take us to Pelham Bay and Country Club, and City Island is over its bridge from there. Scheduling runs Monday to Friday; for something urgent, pick up the phone.
Nearby
North of Riverdale the city ends and Westchester, just over the city line begins, with Yonkers and the Rivertowns right up the Hudson. Down the West Side, Manhattan’s pre-war apartments and townhouses are a short run on the same parkway. Over the Throgs Neck and Whitestone bridges are the Queens houses along Little Neck Bay. Every other area is listed on each region on our service map.
Mention the dryer when you call about the hood. It’s the job that gets forgotten, and it’s the one that’s easiest to add.
